THE PEOPLE’S LEGISLATURE
You are invited to join
concerned citizens from all over Wisconsin at Madison’s Alliant
Energy Center on January 4, 2005 from 9am to 5 pm
for a convention of The People’s Legislature. The purpose of
this gathering is to draft and deliver a message to the currently
elected Wisconsin legislature about issues the people think should be
addressed during the fall legislative session that convenes on January
5.
Vanishing manufacturing jobs, general economic insecurity,
lack of access to affordable health care, educational inequities, the
growing gap between rich and poor, threats to our environment,
mismanagement in state government, and other issues important to
Wisconsinites may not be given full and open debate in the Wisconsin
legislature unless certain underlying practices are reformed.
Therefore, the People’s Legislature will focus its discussion of
issues around the following interrelated topics:
• Election and ethics reform to
prevent undue influence by lobbyists and other groups who place their
interests above the common good of all Wisconsinites
• Campaign finance reform to
allow qualified, non-incumbent candidates greater ability to present
their positions and vision to the electorate
• Redistricting to ensure
integrity of legislative districts and promote more competitive races.
The People’s Legislature is in the process of becominga
work in progressand you are invited to help bring it to life. A
survey will soon be available at the Fighting Bob website (www.FightingBob.com),
Wisconsin’s progressive voice, to allow you prioritize the issues most
important to you. Your input will be used to form breakout sessions
on January 4th.
If you want to add your name to a public list
of supporters of this event, please send an e-mail message to the Sauk
Prairie Area Peace Council at sppeace@hotmail.com or drop the
council a note at PO Box 144 Sauk City, Wisconsin 53583.
